Earthbox, how many pepper plants do you put?
I just bought 3 more earthboxes for a total of 11. Normally I only put 2 pepper plants
per earthbox, unless I know it's a small plant like Jimmy Nardello's. My problem is I'm growing so many varieties, I would like to squeeze in 4 per earthbox. 6 would be out of the question. Those of you that grow your peppers in earthboxes, how many do you plant per box? |
Earthbox's instruction manual says 6, 3 on each side, fertilizer strip lengthwise down the center. Google Earthbox instruction manual.

Roper has a good point that the generic instruction for 6 pepper plants may not apply to 6 large plants. Peppers like to touch, but do they have reduced productivity when "crammed". I use a 5 gal bucket for just one bell pepper plant and fertilize well so I am skeptical.

I would definitely do 3 small varieties, but that would be the limit. Even if you zig-zagged it will be too crowded for 4 plants.
I don't grow in EBs so I am just comparing the space available. 4 plants would be like growing in an 8" pot which is too small for good production. |
The Nardello’s I’m going to put 4. I was wanting to put California Wonders 4.
Maybe I’ll experiment with that. I know for Jalapeno’s I only put 2 plants, and they get big in the earthboxes. |

I always put 6 plants, even some big ones like poblanos. They do great and have way more peppers than we can eat. You can easily put in 4.

Yes, I think I'll put 4 in most of them. |
sdambr, six of what size plants?
And how much sun do they get? Any varieties you've had that are more noticeably prolific in the boxes? |

The plants get big about 3-4' tall, I put 2 square cages on each box to tie the peppers up as they grow tall, if I don't the wind breaks the branches. They are on my deck and do get about 8 hours of full sun. I will try to find a picture. |
