first tomato in Northern California!

I ate my first two tomatoes today! And they tasted great!

Well, cherry tomatoes. Sun Sugar F1. But tomatoes nevertheless. The seedling went in the ground in early March, but still, this is by far the earliest I've eaten a homegrown tomato in the five or so years I've been keeping records.

The other early plant, Caspian Pink, which went in the ground around the ides of March, has one big green tomato that's not coloring up yet.

Raspberries are also early, and exceptionally dense and leafy, this year.

Still waiting on my first. Its a close race between Sun Sugar and Danko. I have one Danko thats been sitting on the vine and it has not been getting any larger, seems like forever. How is the Green Doctors growing? Mine seems to be loading up on foilage rather than fruit. I mean there is some fruit there but man it has a lot of foilage too.

I have two tiny Sungolds ready to pick! Most are setting fruit, I think my Lemon Boy was next to set after Sungold. Yay~ I was going to pick them today and get a pic....it seems like a good year for tomatoes, unlike last year.

We ate our first few Sungolds on Sunday. Both plants are over the 10 foot mark and loaded with fruit. Got a meal worth of pole beans ready for picking too.

Life is good.

Damon, Green Doctors is about a foot and a half high, with a few flower clusters. Kosovo and a couple others I planted in mid-April are as big as the Caspian Pink that was planted a month before, about 4 ft. high.

I ate a few more Sun Sugars this week.

I am so jealous. I have one Sungold that looks like its going to ripen. So far, I have fruits on my other plants but they are still quite small.

Moonglow June 7, 2009 12:53 PM

I'm kinda jealous, too. Over 30 tomatoes and I'm not even waiting on anything to ripen soon.

Japanese Black Trifele I'm really psyched about because of the profusion of blooms! We shall see!

I ate two more Sun Sugars today! The good news is that I had a few early tomatoes, but the bad news is that the plant is nowhere near as thick-stemmed and leafy as the ones I planted later, probably having to do with cooler soil temps during its formative weeks and a partly shady location. (add: but it's getting bigger and lusher with the warm weather this week)

The big tomato on the Caspian Pink is still green, and it has several smaller greenies. I also noticed greenies on Green Doctors and Fox Cherry (add: also on Kosovo, Dagma's Perfection, Jaune Flamme, and Quick Pick).

I really need to remove the rest of the walls-o-water, now that night temperatures are staying above 50 (last I checked, anyway). But it still feels cool to me when I'm in the garden very early or very late.

Garden Walk today as usual. Hoping the tomatoes will miraculously get bigger faster when stared upon . Suddenly I see many green ones (many) on Black Krim and more are forming on Ananas Noire, Cuore Di Bue...Wow, I shall have tomatoes this summer!

I'm getting Sungold and had a Lemon Boy yesterday. All else is green, but LOTS of green! :)

Not Purple Cherokee from the local nursery! I saved seed. It's small, not even 2' high, and LOADED! Red tomatoes, not purple at all.

Wow! Gorgeous tomatoes!

sprtsguy76 June 17, 2009 12:57 AM

Very nice tomatoes! I've had a few sungolds and sprite as far as they cherries go. As far as the plants growing in the beds Hungarian Heart is starting to blush and so is Anna Maria.

Sprtsguy76-I absolutely the pictures of the heart shaped tomatoes. They are beautiful.

Moonglow June 18, 2009 02:33 PM

i'm so happy for you all with tomatoes, though i feel so behind!!! my black krims are ping-pong ball size still. i have not even tasted sungold just yet. i'm afraid matina, gold dust and chocolate cherry will be ready when i'm in mexico. argh. bad timing.

sprtsguy76 June 20, 2009 12:21 AM

angelique- thank you, i love growing hearts and love their taste.

Had my first Anna Maria tonight and wow, it was really good and it wasn't even 100% ripe (maybe 90%). It was sweet with a little tang, I give it a 8.5 out of 10.
