Favorite HYBRID & older OP COMMERCIAL varieties??
 

Can we please discuss our favorite Hybrid and older OP Commercial varieties?

My all-time favorite hybrid has been & still is **SUNGOLD**.

How about some round, reds??? Better Boy?, Ball's Beefsteak?, Big Beef, Supersonic?? Any thoughts??

Ok Larryd i'm pobably going to get rotten tomatoes thrown at me for this :arrow: but one of the ones that i grew this year were miracle sweets my wife ,family and coworkers just loved them they (for me) were the best out of 18 plants i only lost 1 (deer food :evil: ) and they just kept on shooting out tomatoes! My wife calls them tomato candy and she wants me to grow some next year if i can find a seed source mine came in those little red plastic eggs called flower pot tomato at Walmart. And i also grew the celebrity they were not as productive as the others but we can those for winter and by then they taste pretty good when you just don't have any fresh picked ones ! The other one is sungold they are just now starting to ripen (late start :oops:) so we will have to come back to that one once we have tasted them?

Favorite Hybrids:

Pik Red/Supersonic - both Harris Hybrids, both have VERY meaty interiors and make great thick sauce.

Ramapo - another Harris hybrid dehybridized by Carolyn. My best tasting tomato last year.

Big Zac - Beats Burpee Supersteak for flavor, similar yields.

Favorite Commercial OPs:

Campbells 1327 - great taste, much better yields than other COP's I've tried like Rutgers, Wisconsin 55, and Break O'Day.

I have been pretty impressed with Early Goliath this season.
I picked up a 6 pack from Wal-mart after several of my plants died, so they were planted later than everything else and have still done great. The flavor is better than Early Girl and Better Boy, others I have tried in the past. They are not as sweet as Kimberly, and don't have the rich tomato flavor of New Big dwarf, but not too far behind, so I will grow them again. I wonder how the "other" Goliaths are. They are offered by Totally Tomatoes.

This is my first year growing Sun Gold tomatoes and they are great too.
My experience is limited, ask me again in 5 year.

Beefmaster is decent

Sun Gold and Momotaro are both great.

Spy I planted all six Goliaths from TT this year. Along with their bell and griller peppers. I have tasted them all except the old fashioned one. It almost died then came back and has several fruits but not ripe yet. I've planted the original hybrid several times before. It and the Sunny Goliath are my favorites. The Sunny's are best if left to turn a golden color. And they are all good producers in this hot and dry summer that has suddenly turned wet. The original is the only one I had any disease problems with and not near as much as some others. Especially the OP's. I picked my first Ugly last night and haven't tasted it but impressed with it if it tastes good. Cherokee Purple has produced well and the flavor seems to be getting better since the rain has let up. To sum it up most of the Goliath's will be back. JD

My favorite hybrids are Supersonic and Jet Star by Harris. I have been growing them for many years and have tried many others, but these do the best in my garden and taste great. The Jet Star is many times much earlier than advertised in my garden. I also like their Primetime.

I'd really like to say Big Beef. But the more I grow it, the less I like it. This year several OPs grown right next to the Big Beef were much better tasting, gave more yield, were more blemish free and continue to produce lots of fresh growth now while the Big Beef is floundering.

Also this year I was reminded, after a long hiatus, that about my most all time favorite hybrid is still Big Boy.

When I was a kid, we grew Jet Stars, Rutgers and Big Boys.
All were good, produced tons and were dependable.

This summer, Carolyn has introduced me to Break O Day and Landreth....they're better in my opinion. Much more intense flavor.

A popular OP tomato in this area is Marglobe. Many places sell transplants of it around here..it's good, but I like the others better.

campbells 1327 was nice but campbells L-GS is producing about twice as much. Heinz 1350 and 1765 both are very good producers as well. WI-55 had adequete yields. Bellestar, which I obtained from Jennifer, is going to be a major component of my market types next year. It is a monster for a smaller plant.
