why does this happen?

just curious...why do i sometimes get these little tomatoes ripening along with normal sized ones on the same branch? (early girls in big SWC)

You'll have to ask mother nature about that one. There is no guarantee that a tomato plant will produce a specific number of fruits and those fruits will all be within a small variability of size and shape. The DNA of the plant has preprogrammed the moment in time when the plant turns off the growing and begins the ripening. It could happen to all the fruit on a single truss or, in the case of a determinate plant, all the fruit on a single plant.

It's like a lottery or a horse race. It's like "Forest Gump" said, "..... like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get".
