Inside Potato & Onion Storage?
 

There is not a really good section to put this in - so General Discussion works for me. I was putting up some onions when a question came to mind, "How do others store potatoes and onions inside their home to use soon?" (Not long-term storage.)

Around 20 years ago, we started using a couple of those plastic bags that look like burlap - sort of. (Pictured) I put a screw hook (Pictured) in a ceiling joist 2x4 and hang the potato and onion bags from it. This works well for us. We used to set the bags on the floor, but would lose an onion or potato to rot from time-to-time. I know I'm a gardener, but I don't care for the smell of rotting vegetables - especially in my kitchen.

How do you store them?

The first picture showed to be smaller in size than the second, but it's too big and won't let me edit its size.

Tbh,I have been having trouble figuring out a good way.
I recently saw,on Pinterest,somebody using the tiered hanging plant things with three levels and they replaced the pots with wire baskets.
I’m considering something along those lines. What I have doesn’t work. But,how would you keep them dark with a setup like this?
I really need a better storage system for potatoes,sweet potatoes and onions,plus garlic.
Also,how do you keep them at the right temperature? I noticed that some of my sweet potatoes are sprouting.i had them in the bathroom in a bucket since it had a space heater and moved them to the cooler kitchen a couple of weeks ago,wonder if this caused sprouting?

I keep the majority of my potatoes and onions in wood baskets in my cool basement in the dark.

I also have a pantry closet with shelves off of my kitchen so I keep a small plastic basket of potatoes and another one of onions and garlic in there for immediate use so that I don't have to go to the basement every time I need an onion. It is also dark in there but not as cool as the basement.

I use 19 inch square x 3 inch tall +/- stackable dishwasher racks that I picked up at a restaurant supply. I also have a few 1-1/2 inch vertical extensions. These are similar to milk crates except for the dimensions. I originally purchased these for picking and transporting tomatoes.

I put my potatoes & onions in the refrigerator where they keep forever. Am I the only one, and why?

When potatoes are kept in the refrigerator they will convert a lot of their starches to sugars. This supposedly makes the flavor of the potato less desirable.
