Fig grower?
Do most of you buy the plants or the cutting? I purchased a couple of cuttings that were rooted in 1 gallon pots and were about a !.5 feet tall . In NY we have a rather short season so do you bring them in or lay them on their side and bury them with leaves during the winter?
Thanks, lexx |
If you have an unheated basement that would be ideal! I have a few that are in the ground outside Philly but last winter killed them back to the base. Second choice would be an unheated garage or shed - some folks use a string of x-mas lights to generate a bit of extra warmth.
Are you in the City? The climate is more moderate there. Upstate - forget outside! |
Syracuse and pretty brutal winter this year.

I bring them in in zone 6. I could leave some particularly cold hard ones out and wrap, but I haven't done it yet.

That's pretty cool and thanks for the article.

I bought half a dozen tissue culture fig plants in 2016, and I will finally be getting some figs off them in their third year.
Meanwhile, unrooted cuttings acquired at the same time not only grew much faster, but fruited in their second year. Tissue culture should be disease-free, unlike cuttings where you don't know for sure, but I'd rather not wait an extra year for fruit. |
