eggplant recommendations
 

Hello everybody and thanks in advance.
This next season I am going to have a much larger plot and I would like to have some productive variety with an aubergine flavor, I am not an expert in eggplant, this year I planted some small round pink eggplant plants that had a lot of flavor, they were called aubergine di rosa, I think they were Italian, I always buy hybrids at the nursery. I would like you to recommend a good variety.

I usually recommend to avoid small fruited varieties, as 9 out of 10 people will consistently pick them too late. If seeds are not still very soft and white (and smallish), it's too late, but they do get a somewhat stronger flavour. Certain types of dishes really need that soft young fruit, but not all dishes, in the slow long cooked ones the older fruit will lead to a more thick creamy texture.

Kamo is a variety that has been good in both flavour and production, Madonna F1 has been a great hybrid with very good flesh consistency in all conditions (which is one of the bigger problems of eggplant, fruit getting tough if soil too dry for a bit or other stress factors). Kurume has impressed me with fruit quality also. These last two have not been all that productive for me, but your conditions are very different so it's hard to predict which will do well for you. My current favourite for a combination of traits but not really excelling in any (except earliness) is Xi'an Green.

I would recommend two Japanese varieties-Kyoto Egg and Kamo. Very productive, very good tasting. Fruit not too big, not too small.

This year I finally managed to try Mitoyo, and had to use all I received due to poor germination. Hopefully I manage to gather seeds to offer, but it's getting kind of late. Very good taste and texture, has been a fairly poor producer for me even though the plants have done really well (2.5 kg, half of what I got from Kamo).

Japanese millionaire is by far the biggest producer for me in Atlanta, and the elongated size I like the most. I grow them in large pots.

I’ve never had much luck with standard OP varieties in my Canadian gardens. I tried Nadia F1 this year and it did very well for me. I’m sold on F1 eggplants first my cool spring shorter season

Kamo is delicious, strongly recommend it. Mitoyo is a beautiful plant, not hugely productive for me, but highly recommended, grew a gorgeous fruit I just harvested, about to taste my first one. Millionaire was very productive, early, and tasty. Orient Express is wonderful, tasty and productive, and like Millionaire is an elongated dark purple/black fruit. I also like Dark Red Malaysian for an elongated eggplant, and it is a beautiful lavender color. Neon was one of my favorites, but now can't find the seed anywhere so trying Rosita but hasn't fruited yet. I have had a very tough year b/c the squirrels are stealing all my eggplant as soon as tiny fruits form. Finally outsmarted them by hanging socks over the fruit, so I'm finally getting some! (Shhh, don't tell the squirrels!).

Dancer from Johnny's. It is an excellent replacement for Neon which is generally not available. Burpee's Early Midnight is the best yielding and earliest one I've ever grown, but it has the thicker, black skin. White Star is also good, but sunburns easily here. I grow all of mine in an Earthbox due to Verticillium wilt, so nearly any F1 grows nicely for me. Generally, OP varieties do not do well for me. A notable exception was some F2 Neon seeds that were terrific.
