Long range weather...no more freezes?
Bot this is tempting and stupid all at the same time. All long range weather I have found says no more freezes for us down here. Usually we get a couple in February, they say no.
Guess I'll put in a small row and see what happens and have backup. Does sound like a good time to do buckets in a hoophouse though doesnt it? |

Risky, but if you have back-ups try some. Don''t over do it tho.
My feeling about the weather guessers is just that -- it's a guess. In my neck of the woods it seems they are wrong more than they are right, especially with the long range stuff. Heck they have a hard time getting the '3 day' right. Buckets in a hoophouse or even just planted in there and covered for now. To be taken down when it gets warm. Here is a PVC cold frame I built last fall. It's movable in that it can be taken down and re-assembled in another place without too much work. I would make it a bit different when I do it again. It stood up to a whole lot of wind with a bit of bracing on the side getting hit. It also withstood rain well. It didn't take wet heavy snow mixed with rain tho. i had planed to add some 2x4 support in the center but hadn't gotten to it when we had an ugly storm. It took it down but I should be able to salvage most of the parts and re-do better it this spring. I hope to be able to put in some tomatoes for early fruit for market. Carol |
I predict we don't have any freezes here from mid-June to the end of August.

I have a similar hoop set up, works ok so far. Gets hot in there actually, down here. Squash are going crazy in containers actually now.

I hear you, Keger. I have been thinking about putting my seedlings in the 5 gal. buckets too. They are hardening outside for over 2 weeks now. It feels weird to plant them out so early, but I think I will risk it. Will wait for 1 more week and if there are no changes in the weather forecast - they are going outside for good.

Thanks Keger... You just made mid April and early May that much further away! Good luck though!

Looking at frost as we speak, but its light. Glad I put them all in the hoop house yesterday.
But, it looks good from here on out, but just in case I'm not putting up the hoop until March. |
