As well as basil and tomato compliment each other in the kitchen, I find that they also do the same in the garden. When the two share space in the same plot, they seem to protect and enhance each other. Since you will be using both for dinner anyway, why not grow them side-by-side? The only down-side to that is that whilst in your tomato patch, once you get that sweet wisp of basil's aroma, you may just pick an armload of each and head for the kitchen, totally procrastinating all of the chores you meant to do in the garden.
