Over the last 50 years there have been several in-depth studies of
human sustainability -- most notably from Cornell U. When we consider the planet biosphere as a whole and start following where the calories we consume come from and where they go, it turns out that we (the humans) send most of them to a biological dead-end. Fifty years from now the population will be such that industrialized nations will have to obtain their drinking water and fertilizer inputs from sewer factories -- and I'm talking about chemical and distillation processes, not sewer sludge.
