They work by means of friction. kind of... They're probably inserted into the ground which should more or less stabilize each corner, then the boards are inserted which act kind of like a sway bar on a cars suspension which keep the sides aligned making the box almost completely stable. finally the soil put into the box pushes the boards into the corners of the slots causing friction and making it immobile.

So Unless you consciously try to move the box or the soil that the slots are sitting in undergoes liquefaction it remains where you put it until you're ready to move it.
