Absolutely correct on the over fertilization of tomatoes and peppers. I have also tried leaving the Osmocote out of the mix and adding 1/2 strength Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 or General Hydroponics MaxiBloom 5-15-14 (once production starts) with success. I added about 1/2 pint to the refill of the water chamber twice a week. I have found that both of these products provide good plant nutrition and additional micronutrients.

Forgot about the Epsom Salt, 1 tablespoon per gallon of water, add 1/2 pint every 2 weeks when I fill the water chamber. No problem with blossom end rot for the last two seasons.

My 2 best producing tomatoes in buckets last season were Roma and Marmande. Both produced 25-30 fruits, not large but very tasty and the Marmande grew to 5' tall and would do well in your climate. Pruned both back to 3 stems and pinched additional suckers to control the plants.
