Tomato and Gardening Glossary and Abbreviations

AGG -- Aunt Gertie's Gold; a yellowish-orange or gold late season beefsteak

ARGG -- Aunt Ruby's German Green; a green-when-ripe beefsteak tomato

bagged -- seed from flowers that were bagged to prevent accidental hybridization by insects

BB -- Bloody Butcher; a productive red saladette regular-leaf tomato

BB -- Brandy Boy; a hybrid of Brandywine developed by Burpee Seed Co

BBH -- Brad's Black Heart; a large oxheart purple tomato; developed by Brad Gates

BCW -- Box Car Willie; a medium red oblate tomato; an off-type exists

beefsteak -- a traditional tomato shape, slightly flattened with large shoulders that produces large slices

BER -- blossom end rot; a calcium deficiency remedied by consistent watering and application of mulch

BFT -- Black from Tula; a medium purple oblate tomato

BP -- Black Prince

Brandywine OTV -- large red beefsteak tomato named after "Off The Vine", a newsletter once published by Craig LeHoullier and Carolyn Male.

BT -- Bacillus thuringiensis; a natural pesticide for caterpillars including hornworms; marketed as Dipel Dust or BT Worm Killer

BTD -- Berkeley Tie Dye; a medium green-when-ripe tomato with red and purple striations; developed by Brad Gates

BW -- typically refers to the large pink Brandywine saved Ben Quisenberry; or one of the many tomato varieties with the "Brandywine" moniker including Red Brandywine, Brandywine (pink, Sudduth's), etc.

BWS -- Brandywine Sudduth's; the "original" pink beefsteak known for excellent flavor and finicky productivity; seeds provided to Ben Quisenberry by Dorris Sudduth Hill; grown since the 1880's

BWPS -- Big White Pink Stripes (sometimes marketed by the acronym alone); large pale peach-colored beefsteak with faint pink blush

Catfaced -- distorted fruit, usually resulting from incomplete pollination of a flower

CC -- Cherokee Chocolate; a dusky purple beefsteak tomato

CG -- Cherokee Green; a green-when-ripe beefsteak regular-leaf tomato

CP -- Cherokee Purple; a purple beefsteak regular-leaf tomato; discovered by craig LeHoullier

CMV -- cucumber mosaic virus

CRM -- concrete reinforcing mesh

CRW -- concrete reinforcing wire

CSA -- community supported agriculture, also known as "subscription farming"

CTV -- Curly Top Virus; also seen as beet leaf curly top virus (BLCTV)

DG -- Dave's Garden®; a garden bulletin board and resource website

Det -- determinate; a tomato variety that produces in one harvest

DTM -- days to maturity; time (with ideal good conditions) from transplant to mature fruit.

DIY EB -- Do-it-yourself Earthbox®. - home-made self-watering plant containers

DWS -- Dancing With Smurfs

Dwarf -- a tomato plant with rough thick rugose-type foliage; a compact tomato variety suitable for container growing; may be determinate or indeterminate in habit

EB's -- Earthboxes®, a commercial self-watering container

EF -- Earl's Faux; a pink potato-leaf beefsteak; discovered by Earl Cadenhead

EPA -- Environmental Protection Agency

EPB -- Eva Purple Ball; a pink saladette tomato

F1 -- a hybrid "cross" between two different tomato varieties; the first generation of a newly made hybrid

F -- Fusarium wilt; a soilborn fungal disease; "F" after a variety name indicates disease tolerance

Florida weave -- a trellising method

GA -- Gregori's Altai; an early pink beefsteak tomato

GDC -- Golden Dwarf Champion; a yellow saladette tomato produced on a compact rugose dwarf tomato plant; from Burpee Seed Co (1899)

GE -- genetically engineered

GG -- Green Giant; a green-when-ripe beefsteak tomato

GJ -- German Johnson; large pink beefsteak produced on a regular-leaf tomato plant

KB -- Kellogg's Breakfast; large orange beefsteak regular-leaf tomato; discovered by Darrell Kellogg

KBX -- potato-leaf variation on Kellogg's Breakfast

KHP -- Kalman's Hungarian Pink; a pink plum regular-leaf tomato;

LC -- Lucky Cross; a reddish-yellow bicolor potato-leaf beefsteak; possible cross of Brandywine and Tigerella stabilized by Craig LeHoullier and Larry Bohs

LL -- Little Lucky; a golden oblate tomato with bright red blush and striking pink internal pink marbling; cousin to Lucky Cross

NBD -- New Big Dwarf; a medium pink beefsteak tomato produced on a compact rugose dwarf tomato plant; Isbell's Seed Company (1900's)

NCP -- natural cross-pollination

NPK -- Nitrogen: Phosphorus: Potassium; the ratios of the three major nutrients in a fertilizer

NSP -- natural self-pollination

OP -- open-pollinated; a stable variety that will grow "true" if seeds are saved (not an F1 hybrid)

PL -- potato leaf; a tomato variety with leaves shaped more like those of a potato plant; not regular-leaf

SFG -- Square Foot Gardening; a gardening book and method

SFT -- Silvery Fir Tree; a sharp red saladette tomato from a compact plant with carrot-like feathered foliage; a traditional Russian variety
