I poured a gallon of full strength bleach in there and let it sit overnight, then I yanked it out and burned it. Later that fall, I dug out the entire planting hole and used the dirt to fill in a low spot way out back. Then, I built a fire in the hole and kept it going for about half a day...overkill, maybe, but I was ★★★★ed! Anyway, the next Spring, I filled in with fresh dirt/compost and planted again. No recurrence...so far!

LOL! That's quite a treatment plan. But it appears to have worked. Something else to consider.
And thanks for the tip on the white ring. Something else to watch for. There's
always something to watch for in the South!
