From what I understand, Berere is the brown spice, and there are a few similar brown peppers used to make it in Ethiopia. My Ethiopian collaborator says Mareko Fana is the gold standard.

Berbere is used to describe brown Ethiopian peppers, and a Berbere pepper may be Mareko Fana.

Where did you get your "Berbere" seed?
