How I do it is I use the container for a mold in the soil pull out the potted cucumber and set it in the soil hole I made.

Good technique that's worked for me too. I use it mostly for plants that don't like their feet tickled. With tomatoes and peppers, if they get REALLY root-bound, I prefer to untangle some roots, even forcefully cut some, so the plant develops newer ones for stronger growth.
