And you really do have a good design. Here's the first one I built back in 2008. I put in the overfill hole thru the side of the bucket just at a level even with the top of those "fins". Added a cutout from a top (lid) to make the main bed support and ran a piece of PVC down the inside for refilling. I still have and use it more than 9 years later.
