I found some more useful information on line at a university website the other day.
I have no idea who it was.
What they said is if the temperatures dont stay up to around 60F the onions will not form bulbs and it doesn't matter if they are long or short day onions or if the daylight is enough yet.
This explains why my onions are growing but not forming bulbs.
All the other sights just said when the temperatures warmed up and day length got long enough, not a good representation of any useful information.
