No I dont cover it with anything but thick mineral oil.
If I put a cloth over it a mouse would move under it and make a nest pee on it and really ruin the ways and slides.
I just wipe it down and oil before use.
We dont have blowing sand here in this part of the country.
West Texas is another story.
