I turn on oscillating fans...This causes the seedlings to develop thick, sturdy stems.

I do exactly the same thing. Air movement is crucial for indoor plants. From what I understand, as the seedling bends in the breeze, it causes very slight cell damage to the stem. The wind does the same thing to outdoor plants. The seedling then stops growing upward so it can repair that damage, and it ends up thicker and stronger.
