I stuffed about 30 plants into that space last year (there are 16 this year), and let most of them sprawl. It became a jungle, but no fungus. I barely had to water though. We do have earwigs though, so I lost a ton of fruit, whatever was touching the ground, but they wouldn't eat the Cherokee Green. I hate those things (the earwigs, not the Cherokee Green).
