I don,t know about LD, spotlight style. With FL I keep them anywhere from an inch to 3.obviously, as the seedings grow you need to lift the light higher in order to keep the distance at about the same. FL do not get very hot. Even if the bulb ie almost touching ,it won,t burn the plant/seedling
The distance is a factor to control the amount of light intensity.
