My vote will always be to add support to the plant and let it decide to bulk up or not. In any case, you will be rewarded with what the plant is trying so hard to do.

Treat your plants like children and evaluate what they "logically" need. You'll never go wrong this way. Your 'babies" can't tell you in English language what they need, but they will communicate in their own way and you only need to learn how to listen. Logic should always prevail.
