The critter you describe sounds like a hornworm. They eat the foliage and as much of the fruits (usually still green) as they can consume in their short lives. I've had two so far this year, and both were about 4 inches long and as big around as the end of my pinky finger. Here's a picture of a smaller one from my archives.
