Marktutt, good luck with the direct seeding! I bet you'll at least get some before the frost!
I do suspect that you will end up with quite a few unripe ones at the end of the season, though. If you can, pot a couple of the plants up before the first frost and get them to the brightest frost free place you have available. Even a sunny window in a garage may be enough to keep them from freezing for a while. That will give them extra time to ripen.
If you have a slightly heated greenhouse or an indoor lighting system, they might even continue to flower and fruit through the winter. Even if all you have is a sunny window, you can probably keep them alive until next Spring. Then you will have a head start on the next season.
If you are just growing them to make paprika for your family, you only need a plant or two anyway.
The only pepper I've grown for paprika is Cyklon. We've thoroughly enjoyed it and I will probably continue to have at least one plant around. Homemade paprika is the best!
