I don't know about the store shelves, but I grew up on a farm and we were growing Rutgers back in 50's and 60's and as I posted in the link above there are several strains of them but just a couple are more popular and available than others and if you go to Tania's Website you'll read about some of them.
There are many places that sell seed for Rutgers, TGS is one, Sandhill Preservation is another.
