Even in the cool north, Spring planting can be a toss-up. I have much better luck in
the Fall.
My soil, hard clay and rocks, has improved over the years adding lots of organics and
a couple bags of sand every year in that bed...for beets, radish, and the basil 1/3'd
of the bed.
They like consistent wet showers but no wet feet so good drainage is important.
Those beds are also salad so I run a small sprinkler as often as possible when no showers
are forecast. Still I get just pathetic ping-pong size but good enough for me.
I'm testing some 5 gal grow bags this year. Grew sweet potatoes successfully last year
in a bag. Not much harvest but at least it worked.
They are lovely and tasty.
