Default Giant Pumpkin Technology

Here's a good Giant Pumpkin article from the NYT:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/06/garden/the-race-to-grow-the-one-ton-pumpkin.html?pagewanted=all

Some intriguing ideas that would apply to many crops. Double grafted vines are a new idea, at least to me. One grower is grafting two huge root stocks onto a single vine, to support a single pumpkin. Its just the opposite of the typical practice of grafting multiple limbs onto a single hardy root stock
Any of us who felt self-conscious about being a garden wacko can feel almost ordinary now (relatively speaking).

Double graft them?! Why stop there...?

I'd love to grow a giant pumpkin but a giant watermelon would be even more awesome.
