Where to obtain packages and storage ideas for seeds.

Hello,

I know next winter I want to give away some of my excess seeds, and possibly offer any I saved. I was wondering what kind of envelopes, and where to obtain that you guys like to use. Also what do you store your seeds in?
Currently I have them in the fridge in a large jar in original envelopes. Any good source for small envelopes? Do they sell them at Office Max etc?
I'm sure this has been covered a thousand times, so links to other threads will do too. I just want to see what what you guys use as so many are inventive and innovative in everything to do with gardening.
So just to recap I'm looking for envelopes to send seed to others, and ideas for long term seed storage. I'm such an unorganized person, any help to somewhat tame the beast appreciated!

Hi there,
Many of us use tiny plastic ziplock baggies which are available in my area at the dollarama store. I have seen them in craft stores as well. I like the plastic ones over paper as you can see the number of seeds inside but the seed needs to be dry before it is stored. I have never had it mold. As for storage, a cool, dry and dim location wll work. I don't keep them in the fridge (no room) and they easily last five years or more. I give lots away and trade as well to Try not to keep any old ones. If seed is getting old, just grow out a plant and save new seed to replace the old every five years or so. I keep mine in photo albums with plastic sleeves to slip the packets into. works for me.

When I am looking for ideas about something, many times I type into the Google search engine the term that best applies. When the response comes up, I hit the "images" button at the top of the page and there's a whole lotta ideas all gathered together in one place to peruse. You might try that with the term "seed storage" and see what you get.

I purchased the paper coin envelopes on E-Bay. You can also get the plastic baggies at Walmart for cheap $1 for 200 I believe.

I put seed packets in Oxo POP containers and store them in a cool dark dry place - a closet in a north room of the house.

We used this method for years without any problems. Now i just use a couple of packages of desiccant in the jar and store in a cool closet.

I prefer plastic bags to paper envelopes. The main reason is protection from accidental wetting. I've dropped envelopes in the one wet spot on the floor. I've had a cat pee on some packets when he got locked in the room with them. The mail box is always damp. If they are something that you take to the garden to plant you don't have to be as careful about where you set them. They are easier to close which means you have less of a chance of spilling them.
