First tomato of the season
I just ate my first Sungold!
Those of you who read my woe-full update will know that I purchased a few plants when it was obvious that my seedlings had been badly neglected. One of the store plants was a sungold and I had a lovely bright tomato for my mid-morning snack. It occurs to me that I could've taken a photo of it with my beautiful new camera - but I haven't had the camera long enough to think of that. There is another on that cluster, I'll try to get a shot before I eat it. Cyn

Some of you might remember last year - when my plants were LOADED with green tomatoes, the raccoons had a party and ate them all. This year, I have the plants in a dog kennel - now called the tomato kennel. I am also going to get some chicken wire to cover the top as I think they could easily climb in.
I will figure this country gardening out!! 2007 might be the year of the great tomato harvest. Cyn

Cyn-Its always a learning experience with me. When I think I have it figured out, I have a bad year and have to figure out what went wrong. With me, its usually too much heat, too soon, leading to blossom drop. or its too much wind leading to beat-up plants (we are talking 35-50 mph wind in the Spring) So this year, I planted out two weeks early and used a wind break-it was agribon that was attached to the cages and containers. So far, it seem like the solution-at least the latest solution.

Michael - you are right.
Just as soon as I wrote, "I will figure this out" I got a sinking feeling that I was speaking waaayyy too soon.

It happens every year to me-finally, I have it. This year, I germinated and planted 75 varieties to "see what grows best in my climate."

Had a few sungolds and a couple sunsugars. Not tasting like last years, hope they plan to get better. Maybe the early season is doing something to the first ones. But I know how a sungold is supposed to taste, had that last fall. Right now seems like they are kind of mushy.
