Large Red
Has anyone ever grew LR, I got the seeds from Tomatofest?
I was hooked and reeled in by the history attached to the ad for this tomato. The story says; it was very popular during mid 1800's, a campfire story, or not, I had to try it. At any rate, it is a serious producer, and is very robust with huge thick stems. I can't wait until one is ripe, I have to ask how it tastes? Happy season everyone. |

http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Large_Red Most varieties back then were ribbed and often hollow, as was true for Large Red, for me. I wouldn't grow it again. I saw from Tania's page that there were quite a few seed sources and again,I think for the historical background as well And interesting to me from a personal viewpoint since I was raised in a Shaker built home and my grandmother Male was good friends with some of the Shaker ladies at the Shaker settlement near the Albany NY airport, which was founded by Mother Ann Lee/ Carolyn

Carolyn, thanks for the insight, I only grew two of them, so they will end up canned if nothing else. BTW, is there any variety you have'nt grown? (lol)

I am growing Early Large Red but I don't think it is related. It is one of my favorite early varieties, though.

And I find conflicting info about Large Red and Early large Red by checking a few SSE Yearbooks, but haven't resolved it yet.

I hope to get that tomato and grow it one of these days. I should start a "Bucket List" of tomato varieties yet un tried by me! Some guy in TX posted on a different forum last year that it was a good tomato for growing in heat.
