How low of a temp and for how long can garlic survive? A bit nippy here in the Northern Rocky Mountains.

Hardneck garlics do best in the north, and survive cold winters, but a good deep mulch is necessary to hedge your bets. A couple of T'villians have reported losses in exceptionally cold winters without snow cover.

28 F won't kill a typical hardneck garlic. There are some more sensitive types that might succomb, I suppose, if they're not mulched and the ground freezes down to where they're planted? Perhaps. Some garlic might get a yellow leaf or two if exposed to those temperatures repeatedly (after it's through the ground). It won't affect production though.

I grow hardnecks that are planted in the fall and mulched. In the winter of 2017/18 we had about a two week stretch with over night temps below 0F and day-time highs in the single digits. Last summer I had one of the best garlic harvests I several years.

28F will not kill any garlic, even the so called spring garlic.
