Winners from the 2010 Party
It was a great time and we had a lot of wonderful tomatoes to taste!
The winners are as follows: Sweetest~ Snow White grown by Mark Korney Prettiest~ Sparks Yellow grown by Julianna G. aka Sorellina Ugliest~ a big unknown lumpy pink tomato grown by Toby Rotella. We had a late arrival of one that was butt ugly and looked like a giant curled up horn worm that garnered a few votes and probably would have won if they arrived earlier so Toby kept his certificate, but graciously gave his bag of TomatoTone to Tauna the grown of "Hornworm" Tangiest~ Guernsey Island grown by me. I finally won something Smallest~ Matt's Wild Cherry grown by Mark Korney Largest~ We didn't get any monster ones this year and Rob K. couldn't make it so I didn't give out an award. I personally did have a 15.8oz. Romeo paste tomato. Best of All was a tie! the prize was given to Henderson's Winsall grown by Julianna G. The other vote getter was Humph grown by me. Norm Brown Award(Craziest Tomato Lover) was given to Pomona for traveling the farthest to come. She came from Pittsburg. (We did have representatives from SC and CA there, but they were already in town.)(

Hi! I had so much fun yesterday, and I am still trying to organize the pictures to post.
We had the following varieties at this year's taste fest. I apologize for those names that I have gotten wrong! Please correct me! Annie Black Belle Butter & Bull Heart Carbon Cherokee Green Grape Cherokee Purple Chyornyi Prince Doe Hill Pepper Earlibell Elberta Peach Evan's Purple Pear Fantome De Laos Furry White Boar Guernsey Island Haley's Purple Comet Halm Gelbe Topftomate Henderson's Winsall Humph Indian Stripe KBX Kentucky Pink Stamper RL Legend Monkey A$$ Mountain Princess Neve's Azorean Red Olive Hill Orange ? Orange Fleshed Purple Smudge Pineapple Pineapple tomatillo (probably doesn't count) Pink German Pink Ping Pong Power's Heirloom Purple Calabash Remy Rouge Roma Romeo Snow White Spark's Yellow St Fiacre Cherry Stardust Cherry Sugary Sungold Tigrovy Yellow Pear Zloty Ozarowski Pictures are coming in my next post, hopefully alphabetically, but the names should show in the images. After the dr Tomato incident I made a copyright watermark on the pictures. My friend Remy can use the pictures on her website. Everyone else has to ask to use them outside Tomatoville and businesses (for profit) can use the tomatopictures for a fee. Last edited by remy; August 31, 2010 at 12:05 PM. Here are just general pictures from the party. It was a great day! Next year I hope to contribute with tomatoes as well! See the picture of Zana's Armenian baklava behind the netting. I would have come only for that, the tomatoes and good company was just a huge bonus.

Hilde,
Great photos! I love them. I like how you made Gary hold Hornworm. I missed that. Remy

Very cool photos! Thanks for sharing about your event. It's amazing to see and
hear about all of the different tomato festivals around the country. My DW has been wanting to see Niagra Falls... hmmmm I wonder when your event will be held next year?! Lee

You know you are always more than welcome to join us. The party location is only 5 minutes from the city of Niagara Falls. Julianna, I'm so glad you decided to come this year! Your picture came out great. Maybe they'll use it for the newspaper article. I'm grilling your yummy eggplant for dinner. Thank you! Remy

Ciao all-
Remy, thank you so much for hosting and also for your wonderful hospitality. We had such a fantastic time. It was just the relaxing getaway we all needed, not to mention the amazing deals we all got with the shopping. Zana, thanks again for all of the driving and great conversation. I don't think I have anywhere near as much fun going grocery shopping as when we're with you! Hilde, thanks for taking such terriffic photos as usual. That camera of yours is quite a nice little toy! And to everyone who attended, it was a real treat getting to know you all. Conversation was lively and enthusiastic. It was hard not to feel like a 5 year old at Christmas. And to Sheryl, whose natural humour and relaxed nature is such a blessing to everyone. I'm really looking forward to seeing your little family hopefully around the holidays if my mother comes for a visit and maybe attending Mass at your parish. Hugs to you all! PS Our carpet tigers greeted us at the door with purrs of delight. It was good to get home early enough to be able to spend time with them so they could settle down and get back into their little routine. We were also able to water things before the sun went down and the entire garden really needed it. I'm still catching up with the watering today. And the harvests! A couple zucchini got away from me and they're monsters, so I may have to just stuff and bake those.

Remy,
As usual you are the hostess with the mostest! What a great fabulous party! I admit to sleeping a good part of today....catching up between loading more boxes in the van....but wouldn't trade the weekend for anything! The seeds in the ziplock bags are on the gardening counter in the garage at the new place (no chance the cleaning lady from Dad's is going anywhere near these babies!)....waiting until they're good and fermented. I still have to compile a master list of which ones we got saved - and that are in my possesion. You still have the ones that were whole to work through. Your directions to the shopping locations were spot on...even if I managed to miss some of the turn offs. LOL....too distracted by conversations in the van, no doubt. LOL We got through the border crossing going home without any problems....yipppppeeeeee! I unloaded at the new place upon my return, and met some more of my new neighbours (who had all moved in over the weekend- so glad I was away as my driveway was blocked for most of Saturday and Sunday...LOL). I did check the contents of the big box and 3 out of 4 of the framed posters' glass were shattered. Will have to check to see if the posters themselves are damaged, but I opened it up on driveway last night and it was too dark to tell. Packed them back up again and will deal with them and FEDex later. Then I came home, checked email and then crashed....big time. LOL Thanks again for letting us crash there. (My two older nephews here in town have already absconded with the "new tent" I picked up at Target...think they're planning on camping in the backyard tonight....much to the non-delight of my sister-in-law, who figures that means she'll have to sleep outside too...LOL) Now to get the new place unpacked so that I can be invaded for Oktoberfest upon my return from OZ. Do you think you and Sheryl could actually make it this year?!?!? As usual Sheryl's humour kept us in stitches...and Gary and Jeff at the grill were masterful. Tell Jeff, I'll make him more baklava and pick up more of the salami if he comes for Oktoberfest. LOL Jules, It was a delight carpooling, shopping and sharing all those marvelous meals you prepared in advance with you and Duane. And yeah, shopping is definitely a social activity that should be combined with comedy. Lessens the pain at the register. Still haven't heard a peep out of my bro about the long "dead air" message on his voice mail. But I'm sure it will be pithy. Hilde, To the mad woman with the camera....think we got off lightly considering your past snapping of pics. But thanks again so much for taking all the pics of the tomatoes. And yeah, we'll have to arrange a Baklava class in the future. LOL Pomona & Mike, Enjoying chatting with both of you...and definitely will try to get to Pittsburgh for a ball game next spring. Road trip....hmmmmm....could probably tempt Terry into joining me too. LOL Mark, Hope you got all the seeds you wanted from last year, but if there are any missing, just let me know and I'll post them too you. Sorry, but by the time we got up on Sunday, cleaned up, packed up and left Remy's we only had time to make our shopping stops and head home before it was dark. Next time I'm over, perhaps I'll be able to see your set up....but then again, might have to leave it until Spring. I'll try to help you with the lifting then, too. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ For those that did make it, but weren't already mentioned, great meeting all of you. It was definitely a blast as always. At least this time by coming early(Friday night), I wasn't stuck at the border for 2.5 hours and missed most of the party like last year. Hopefully next year I'll have some tomatoes of my own to share. In the mean time, watch for a thread for the seeds from this year's party. Free to those that attended. Trades for those that didn't - they're thrown in the same box with the party seeds for the "attendees" to go through. To those that didn't make it at the last minute...you know who you are....sorry to have missed you. To those that are thinking about it for next year....definitely consider it. Lots going on if you're thinking about coming from far away. Make a weekend of it. If you're a Canuck...think about doing what Julianna, Duane and I did - arrive Friday night and leave Sunday. You're then out for the required 48 hours to be able to claim up to $400 duty free upon return....should you feel the need to go shopping....LOL. We even pick up some tomato and pepper books! Had a fabulous time...can't wait for next year! Zana |

Zana,
Sleeping, I was wondering where you were. It of course was great to have you there as usual. I'm glad you had a terrific time and your shopping excursion went well. I can't believe the glass was all shattered! I didn't even think to open the pkg. when it arrived, and I should of being you told me they were framed. I hope the posters are ok. I know I can't go to Octoberfest on Sat. It is a long story. But I know it starts earlier in the week right? I know you'll give me the details. Remy

I tried to make the fest this year, but had lots of things go wrong that morning which was totally in keeping with the way this year has gone for me. I needed to stop at Tara's to pick up some plants she saved for me, and by the time I finally got there, I was beat. Next year......
Hilde! I have tried several times to get a viable cutting going from what is supposed to be my Michel Buchner lilac. I am not having much luck getting them to survive once transplanted after rooting them, but will keep trying. If I do manage to get a survivor I will bring it to the plant swap 2011. -Rosalinda |
