Ah, right, meant to mention what those are. They are watering spikes. Work great for vacations.
They are basically a tube connected to a porous ceramic probe. The green tube is placed in a reservoir (1 gallon jug in this case). As the water seeps out of the ceramic probe into the potting mix a vacuum is formed which draws water out of the reservoir. You have to make sure the green cap on the spike is on tight or a vacuum doesn't form and the spike dries out. The water must be below the plants, it's not a siphon. One works fine for 4-6" pots. Larger probably require two spikes/pot.
