Perhaps you can start with with one wick in the reservoir and insert others as the season goes on (get them in the soil now). A small feed backed up by hand watering is reasonable.

I still worry that you have (if I read you correctly above) a moisture meter that you don't trust.

Also, I'm not entirely clear on the drainage of your tubs. Are they sealed below? or will excess water drain through?
