Default How reliable are seed "sonograms" ?

I just soaked my pepper seeds for 8 hrs and planted in soiless seed starting mix. I read somewhere to soak them for 4-8 hrs and then to see if they were viable by shining a flashlight through them to see if you can see an embryo. Does this really work?

I used a piece of saran wrap, put the seeds on it and put on top of flashlight.

First I've heard of it, I'm interested to know now too.
