so the answer is no... after a heavy storm today some of my plants, now 6.5ft tall were pretty bent but not broken. I was thinking about driving 8ft stakes at the corners of each bed as well as on the sides at 5 ft (beds are 4 ft x 10ft) and then using jute to build an additional support structure.

I trench plant and have multiple stems at ground level. No pruning for me but I do remove the lower leaves that are at ground level sitting on mulch.
I do not recommend a sprawling plant. Unless you have foolproof fencing, its a buffet for critters. Too many ripe yummies chomped on and a mess with flies too. - Lisa |
