It was too late to edit the above. I meant to add: When I asked a question a lot like this one - someone suggested wrapping the toothpicks and plant with foil. I tried that this year. It was a really wet early spring and the foil caused roots to grow under the foil. It didn't seem to hurt anything, but it was odd seeing roots growing above ground.
