The first time I saw he would've been born that season. Not a big moosie!

The second year he returned just with nubs on head - one year old. So this year he would be two or a bit more than two as JR said.

Not full grown by any means... these animals can get huge.

As big as a typical horse at this point.

Early settlers tried to establish a moose colony in the what is now the Fiordland National Park which is down in the SW corner of the South Island. They never did very well for some reason and very likely to have died out, though there has been the odd reported sighting over the years its likely to have been red deer. Just as well too, we are over run with enough introduced pest animals as it is...skid..getting off topic.

Raining here this morning. Still no snow on the ground at my place for the fourth winter in a row, starting to think snow could be a thing of the past.

Richard, both the moose and the snowshoe hare are introduced here as well. They can be quite destructive (voracious tree eaters both) so we have to eat em to keep the populations within reason. But no hunting is allowed close to human housing, so the local moose are willing to pose for the camera.

So hot I have no problem getting Smokey the cat to come back in the house when I let her out when I come home.

Windows open and fan sucking through the house, first time in a long time. Humidity has dropped and supposed to be 60F by 6am. 67F now. Supposed to be 57 tomorrow night and an 80s/60s week.

Too hot here too for the past couple of days. By local standards that is.

Humidex was 32 C yesterday and there isn't a puff of wind to cool you this morning. Without AC the house can also get way hotter than that... ugh. I know, totally wimpy compared to what you go through in the south, but we're used to getting moderate to strong SWesterlies all summer, which makes the heat a lot more pleasant.

We've had windless patches before - I recall a couple years ago it went on for over a month - but this is months in, hot or cold, and no sign of stopping. Strangest weather ever, and do not like!

Some nasty looking storm clouds are entering the Atlantic ocean off the western African coast. The National Hurricane Center hasn't posted anything on these storms yet, but I would expect that to change soon. The lower pictures are from the Weather Underground's website using their interactive satellite mapping.

I read the other day that the El Nino is over, so hurricane season is expected to be busy after all. I guess it's making good on that prediction.

Guess we should enjoy the next week, after that we'll be watching to see which one is headed which way.
