good to hear you have still have life in those beans.
hedge your bets. hold some aside in case you need them next year. if you have 30 seeds, plant no more than half of them. if you lose them to bugs, bunnies, bad weather etc. you have 15 seeds to try again. then next year, plant half again. that way you spread the risk of something bad happening over several years. always play it safe when you have a limited number of seeds. keith

Yep that is what I usually do but I was down to just 4 seeds the last time I planted them, mY SIL father was always the seed keeper for these and I should not have relied on him. mY fault I had so few.
Since writung this morning I now have all 10 just showing green out of their little pots. They will go out in the greenhouse when big enough and some of the other 30 will go into a garden bed when warm enough ..but not very many lol |

Have you considered giving a few seeds to other experienced seed savers to build up the stock?

The old guys house is nearly empty now and they have started on the three garages. My daughter came home yesterday with a box she found, it had some regular seeds packets of assorted stuff but there was a tin with about 2 lbs of his bean !!!! I don't know how old but I am going to test them tomorrow.
I will share if they work out. Oh and also in the box was a packet o,d Scarlet runner beans, the packet was unopened ,in pristine condition and and dated 1988. I have them pinned up in my workroom. They also brought me two clumps of what they thought were chives and garlic chives. One is actually garlic that has perennialised in his garden and I am pretty sure the other clump is leeks that have done the same. We quickly found them a spot, they look pretty sad but hopefully they will some back next year. My daughter said the patch was as big as a garage. |
