Stick - USDA PI 330725

This is the oddest-looking tomato I have ever grown. When I first read about Stick, I wanted to grow it, just to see what it looked like. I had read a posting by Craig that taste wise it was noting special, but that did not defer me from wanting to grow it.

I am glad that I did. As Craig said, the taste is nothing special. It was sweet and pleasant tasting, but nothing stands out about the taste. There are all kinds of small tomatoes that have much better taste and higher production. What they do not have is the look that Stick has, it is very unique. In the future, I will grow it as an ornamental plant. What a great conversation piece. People come over, when they see it they say, "What is that"! It is a great conversation piece.

I planted three plants, two in one container and one in another. Here are some images. The mature plants are about 3 foot tall.

I wonder if you could "over-winter"
it, and make it a house plant until spring ???

Some pictures of my Stick growing experience from this year. Average height (about 1 m indoor), small fruits (barely larger than cherries) - bright-red but with thin orange stripes (as seen on the close-up photo

), average flavor. Just satisfied my idle curiosity about this odd-looking tomato variety

I have tried stick twice and it did not come true. I plan on not trying again as I need the room for the better ones!

I like to grow things like that in the garden as a curiosity. Something for others too look at. But like Rena, I have to limit it as I need the space.

My stick didnt' come up this year!

I like to plant 3 Sticks together at the short end of a raised bed for ornamental purposes. And I've put a row of Microtoms at the feet of a row of bigger indets. It's just fun to grow these weird off-type tomatoes. I'm still hoping to find some seeds from the varigated green and white leafed tomato.

As far as Sticks not coming true, usually I've had about 20% come up as RL's. I start 8-10 seeds and usually at least 2 will not be curly. I did grow one RL out and it was nothing special, small and hard, worse flavor than Stick itself, I thought.

I've got at least one stick that's growing true! : ) What an amazing looking seedling and it's got me grinning from ear to ear ... no idea about how it'll taste but it's sure one cool looking plant (and I know we will enjoy watching it grow).
