Since that is the case, when the two (BRD/DDR) were reunited ,IMO, the name should have become Matina -Tamina.

Black Krim:
https://www.thompson-morgan.com/p/tomato-tamina/506TM This company used to sell seeds in the USA, and I bought this variety when I first started growing a garden in Nebraska. I miss their selection, as they have some uncommon varieties for us picky growers. They used to offer one packet free with three purchased. - Lisa |

I don't say this is the case. It was a joke) At least they have been using the same country name (Germany) since then and speaking the same language
![]() By the way, I've seen that in 1989 while living in DDR from 1988 till 1992, but I was too young to be interested in tomato growing and naming ![]()

yes, it is wonderful the two are reunited--BIL was in Germany back then, and picked up a piece of the wall. A piece of history. He moved back last fall--I'm sure it is a far different place now....

Well all this talk of Matina/Tamina and Yablonka Rossii
has prompted me to trial my "Yablonka Rossii " seeds anyway (From Tatiana's) I guess what have you got to lose ? ...if you notice more of the "Russian apple tree" habit ...but still highly recommended . IF it is the same then ... Matina is certainly not the worst plant to have extra of .. LOL

Renaming (translation) does not bring anything new for us tomato grower! Only an increasing number of "sorts of varieties" and a bigger mess. Any discussion on Tomatoville does not change that. Each of us (if we are not a breeder) should verify the variety in which it actually is.

Vladimir, I apprediate your view.
Tomato varieties are at times very confusing to me. The names change. Or names are used more than once. I have learned that keeping the source attached to a packet of seed is important. As a newbie to tomatoes, I depend on the aucrracy of the packaging label. I am still learning the nuances of a tomato plant. Growing varieties named the same side by side seems to be most useful. As you said , a mess. Breeding horses is easier as we use DNA for identification. Not so easy with tomatos. Last edited by Black Krim; February 3, 2018 at 06:59 PM. |

I almost forgot this one ....very early ..
but does not like extra heat etc. I have added this one to my 2018 grow list after a few years absent.

I grew this in a cool coastal area ...... cool moderate summers ..
and was very early . but when we had record breaking heat waves ...or even above average summer this one needed more protection from extreme heat .

Gotcha. This makes sense to me. IMO if a variety copes with cold/ cool, it is not likely to deal with heat. A few exceptions, but they are just that, exceptions.
