We're also working on this line. It's a nice size and from our previous cross to Sophie's. A little later at 70 days, but the plants set a ton.

Also at Johnnys as well as High Mowing Seeds from the above Google Search. Darrel, I don't know why the Google link indicates your site and then says your site can be blocked. One of the links referred to you and Indigo Rose, but I see nothng at your website about Indigo Rose.

hi Mark -
J & L Select is a selection of 'Bosque Blue', and has sometimes shown a bit of flecking. This line shows a stronger color variation, but I'm not certain how stable or persistent the trait is. It was fairly uniform - all the plants in the line showed it. Below is what it looked like the previous season. I think the taste is quite good - like the better salad types. |

Thanks! I'd ordered to J&L Select and Bosque Blue and didn't see the distinct flecking in those pictures, so I was curious if it was just the photo. I'm still hoping to find a few more saladette or larger blue options, but between yours, Indigo Rose and a couple that came in via trades I'm looking forward to a colorful 2012 season!

It's great to see all the activity surrounding these new genes, and I'm curious how the different types compare at this point. Since you're going to try a bunch or them, perhaps you can let us know how it goes.

I just got some of your seed in the mail Goodwin, I received a pack labeled J&L select, selection from a single large fruit or something like that. Is this possibly the same as the beautiful creature above?

hi daniel - yes, what I sent was a close relative. I've done some selection in that line for variation in color, but J&L Select has the original trait. We just don't know yet how strongly it will be expressed under different conditions, so it would be great if you had room for a plant or two.
This is an exciting time to be working in breeding because of all the new genetic material which has become available. Tom will have new crosses I'd expect - we should find out soon. I'll be growing Myer's line this year to compare with our crosses and selections. He will certainly have done further work to improve it. We are still early in the number of generations, so all sorts of unexpected things may happen. It is a help to have local restaurants which give folks some room to experiment. Our farm supplies a couple of places in Santa Fe like that. I need to decide how much to plant as well. There is another three acre parcel with water just up the road I could use, but that would be a whole different level from what Jan and I are doing now. |
