I was going out every morning with great anticipation until about 2 weeks ago when the diseases kicked into high gear. Now when I go out in the mornings it is with trepidation.

Yes indeed, the veggie garden is where I start my days -- it's where I do most of my work for the day too. Here's what I saw this morning, Kathy. As you can see it's pretty much a jungle right now but there actually are 3' paths between each 4' X 8' bed. And, FWIW, the Sunn Hemp isn't for smoking -- it's a cover crop that's supposed to help in the battle against root knot nematodes (RKNs).

I'll admit it, I was wondering. Does that work better than Elbon rye?

Your garden is lovely -- I hope mine will look like that someday!

I work from home so Im usually out there at least twice a day. We moved onto a half acre when we bought this house in October and it was pretty much a blank slate so Ive being doing some massive landscaping and gardening probjects so its usually hard grulling and not always relaxing work. I try and take some time in the after dinner and before baseball comes on to walk around and just observe everything in a relaxing manner. That's usually when I check for ripening and tie up branches and stuff.

Definitely on my off days and before work if I have time. If not it's about the first thing I do when I get home.

Pics of what we saw today (funny you should ask):

The purple zinnias finally opened up. My wife really likes these, they fit in with her color scheme.

The sunflowers have also opened. Been waiting forever for those! They are at the entrance to my tomato garden.

Pan and my pet dragon (you're not the only one, Daenerys!) keep the deer away.

The Giant Belgium tomatoes are coming into their own. I can taste them now...now...now...

Out here in the southwest, we play salsa music!

I like Cubanelle or Banana peppers in my scrambled eggs, so I'll take a walk around before picking some for breakfast. When the corn is pollinating is my favorite time, I love the smell, and watching the bees loaded with so much pollen that it's all they can do to fly.

The jury's still out on whether or not Sunn Hemp helps in the fight against RKNs and I've never tried Elbon Rye. However, the hemp is a summer cover crop and it as well as the cowpeas are what I'm using as cover crops this summer. Rye is a fall/winter crop and I'll probably try it too -- we'll see in a few more months. I figure for the next few years I'll be trialing all sorts of stuff -- veggies as well as soil builders in search of what we like to eat and what performs well in what I consider to be a rather hostile environment for growing much of anything.

Yes, it does, Kathy, and your thread inspired me to take my camera along this morning! Sometimes I'll take even take my smoothie with me, stroll, admire, and do whatever can be done with one hand while I make mental notes about what needs to be done that day. Actually since I'm retired I spend lots of time in the garden each day weather permitting but it's important to remember to slow it down a bit from time to time and just stroll.
Here's what caught my eye on this beautiful morning:

I move my container plants to get the morning sun, and again to get the afternoon sun. Everyone gets words of encouragement and thanks.
A funny thing: The leaf of my lemon tree that I always give a pat to, is the biggest leaf on the tree. Strange !
