Ok so if the principle is just for the heat required to speed germination and not the actual light, I was wondering if you could just use regular incandescent one to two bulbs as they should give off 1/3 to 2/3 more heat than the florescent bulb? or do you think that could generate too much heat?

You could use any light to generate the heat. I think the florescent bulbs do a better job though. It's a lot easier to control temps with them. I have no problem keeping temps at 75 to 95 degrees with this set up.

here is a good light for a box as you have built and cheap to..a rope light, 3ft to 6 ft would be enought..this is what I put together to grow my own sweet potato slips. used in a plastic box with aluminum foil in bottom facing up, .the rope lights are water proof, flexible, and easy to thread through a box/tub, |
