It was not a simple as you would think (and took MANY years....)
As the paper I linked mentions, it required a suite of genes from multiple species and lots of fine tuning of that engine to get *commercial* levels of omega FAs in the desired proportions into camelina (not sure if it's actually commercially viable levels now). Most complex genetic engineering project published to date to show success in the field, that I am aware of. From the paper here are the genes and steps engineered in: We are in violent agreement that converting a C3 plant to C4 or N fixing maize is orders of magnitude more complex and difficult. It's only a matter of time, there are very clever people working on these problems.
