Liliums - last years planting
The pink from last years purchase is really starting to open some flowers, while the yellow from last year has produced 4 offsets, one of which is in flower, with two other offsets and the main plant not being to far behind.

KarenO, with the crazy weather we have had over the last six weeks, most of the plants have not yet begun to set fruit. Weather has been a lot wetter than normal and hence with the associated cloud, a lot cooler than average although today is forecast to top 40C. The wind has been the worst of it, recon that any pollinators would have been blown away if they attempted to fly. Lots of buds have fallen off as a result. Winds have regularly been 60 to 80 kph, far more typical of what we get normally in September. Will double check and post plant photos shortly

Ah, lilies. It's so nice to see them now that the leaves are off the trees here. It will be four months until the ones here do their thing so your's sub nicely.

Woz, don't feel alone with your tomatoes not setting fruit, as I've probably got about 15 fruit on 30 plants. I planted mine in October and thought I'd get something by Christmas, but not to be.
Mother Nature does some crazy stuff at times. |

Joe the stick insect
For those who like the stickies, they have returned to us for there summer holiday from the classroom. This one is Joe, the male, whom we always thought was just a bit stunted in comparison to Bingo, the female. Male are smaller than females and can fly. Hopefully I shall be able to get a shot of Joe with wings spread down the track. Wings in this case are folded above his abdomen.

New to us lilies
These are three of the five lilies that we picked up at the local field days back in March. One tried to flower in winter and the buds got frosted, no surprise there, one still to come. These do have names, just forgotten to write them down.

KarenO, quickly checked the KARMA/ Northern gardener lines today, plenty of buds coming with the first opening now. Plants are looking Good, especially considering the recent heat and that they are relying on soil moisture, I have not watered them so far this season, rather unusual for this time of the year. KARMA Pink is definitely the tallest of yours, would be pushing 60 cm I think, thanks to the extra years acclimatization and being planted in the more moisture retentive sand.

I hope the weather moderates to reasonable so those blooms set. Its very good that they look like they tolerate heat quite well. Others in hot areas have had success with them as well.I do think they will set better if they are not also too stressed by drought at that critical time when blooms are being pollinated.
I’m happy to hear they are doing well in your tough conditions! It’s exciting to see your pictures as we are in the darkest days of winter here Happy holidays to you and yours! KarenO |

Thanks Karen, the worst of the heat is over for now, 20 to 27C forecast until Christmas so we should see some fruit set, winds are mild also, which will help as well.
Kids finished school for they year yesterday, so holiday fun just begining here. Hope you see an average amount of snow, nothing to excessive or mild Woz |

In copula
Bingo and Joe spent time in close company today. We should get fertile eggs from this coupling resulting in a mix of male and female hatchings, if Bingo laid eggs without mating they would all be female. Not the greatest photo due to glass reflection

Bingo and Joe
For those that would like to see a better size comparison between the male and Female. They have coupled again, so far 2 session roughly 20 long each

We have finally been getting a decent run of heat here, plants have taken off properly growing well and setting fruit nicely. The youngberries nearly ripened and fell before I saw them, about a week ago only the odd one was fully ripe, checked again Christmas eve and fully ripe ones every where, have picked 40 lb over last four days, thankfully no rain otherwise they would have been gone. Tayberies and Jostaberries need picking if birds have left them alone
