Since you folks seem to be also beet experts, I shall ask....
What is your favorite beets for just boiling and eating as a side dish with dinner? I love beets, but planted Detroit Red, loved it and never bothered to try others as I thought it was a real winner, but maybe I am missing something even better. I am certainly open to your opinions. I don't care about leaves, julienne, or other ways of enjoying beets. Just boil and eat!! Thanks for your input. |

Detroit dark red is my fav. But I keep trying new ones. 2 years ago I had tried candy cane beets. They were pretty good too.

I'd like to learn to like beets. Now thanks to Scott, I'm drooling for the beet trifle !
(It sounds like the layers of the dessert trifle). |

For Scott:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/russian...-with-herring/ This looks like the recipe you're talking about. Sounds yummy to me. But I love pickled herring! |

BTW My mother came from Colerain, North Carolina. A tiny tiny town on the east coast near the Chowan River. Once years ago, it was famous for being the pickled herring capital of the world. All gone now though. http://books.google.com/books?id=9dI...lerain&f=false
