No reds do not have the highest brix in my yard but Jacob Cline bee balm which is red is right up there. Try growing some Black and Blue salvia. It is a beautiful deep dark blue that the birds go nuts for and has a very high brix.

Nan if you are meaning the purple and pink shades of bee balm, then you are right that they won't get much use in anyone's yard. The nectar or the sugar is just not there. Unfortunately when we hybridize plants for colors and such, we loose fragrance, nectar production and sugars.

I had a raspberry monarda that hummingbirds liked as well as the Jacob Cline. But I have different hummingbirds here?

The one I have now is a darkish purple-red. The hummingbirds do accept it as well as they accepted the Jacob Cline when I had it. But not the pink stuff.

Does anyone know the variety that have? If the birds like it I would like to have another color. I guess now that you are jarring my memory, I did see the birds using "Raspberry Wine" many years ago at my mother's house. That one is a deep purple red. Is that the one that you have?
I have tried so many varieties, they are all pretty but the birds do not use them and each year more varieties are released.

Here's an image I managed to find quickly. It was 2014 and I don't recall the name except that raspberry was part of it.

Here's another one with both varieties in it. I grow them in pots.

That looks exactly like mine- and I'm pretty sure mine is "Raspberry Wine".

"Jacob Cline" was very popular with the hummingbirds, too.

I think that you have Raspberry Wine too. It's funny 'Jacob Cline' is red and I grew 'Gardenview Scarlet' right next to it which is also red. Jacob Cline was and magnet and Gardenview Scarlet was ignored. This was before I had a refractometer so I do not know the brix counts but I would guess that Scarlet has little nectar and not too sweet either. I will have to try this again. I'm going to have to try this on the tomatoes this year, if I can get them before the deer. Lol
