One method of removing stumps is to fence the area and keep a pig in it for a season.
This is what my ancestors did to turn forest into gardens. They had a special breed of pig that was best for the job, called 'Bell Island Rooters". They would root up all the stumps over a summer and manure the place. The following year they planted turnips. I think that truck is likely going to play a part here, in removing the stumps. Planter indeed! ![]() Digging stumps with a pick is one of the hardest jobs you can do. I have dug a lot of them and also met some that had to stay in the ground. Be careful Worth not to hurt yourself. I bet those trees have deep roots and side shoots galore. It is better to cut as many roots as you can expose rather than try to pull them out as a whole. Then the pieces are manageable, and your truck may be able to pull out the stump and root that's left. |

Potassium Nitrate will remove them with very little work.

I've tried different mixes of all sorts. They kill the stump which sometimes can be set on fire but I never could burn one entirely. When I noticed how much work an excavator could do in one hour I waited till I could find one in the area to do the job.

I don't know how much work a mini backhoe can do, but ever since I saw one, I want it!

And that is the big one. ![]() No need to buy this stuff when you can rent it. The same goes for a boat. Anyone that has owned a boat knows boat stands for Bring ON Another Thousand. I am excluding canoes and row boats. ![]() As for the mini back hoe my neighbors up the street rented one. The idiots tried to use it like a bulldozer and push trees down with it. I came real close to walking up there and showing them how to do it but I didn't. As for my stumps I will more than likely cut them off at ground level cover them with soil when I put in the terrace and let them rot. I dont ever plan on tilling any of it. Worth |

The big backhoes are awesome, they can do anything.

It sure does. I used it on a stump in our front yard. A few months later my daughter and I were out playing and leaned on the stump. It fell over and just crumbled apart.
Of course you can use them as tables for your tools and planters just as you have your saw placed on one until they are ready to be tipped over. ![]()

![]() If a person were in the mind to they could toss some in the compost pile. All it does is supply nitrogen so things can decompose. I also have a black gilled fungi of some sort that will rot one out in one season. When it rots I have left them in the yard and yet another fungus takes over. It looks like the char left over when you burn one of those forth of July snakes. Worth |

I am in a similar boat only my trees are much bigger. They are water oaks, which are heavy as he!!. I trimmed and ripped out so much last year when we first bought the place I got burned out, but at least one of the big oaks needs to go as it shades half my yard by mid-day in summer and water oaks are really bad about constantly dropping limbs. I would have already cut it down if it wasn't so huge. Good luck with the clearing Worth!

Never rent a mini backhoe, they aren't powerful enough to do the job. Renting a big one is expensive of course, but if you can get in touch with a worker nearby he will be happy to come on your place after hours for a reasonable price.

The only time I used a small back hoe was digging trenches inside the foundation area of a new bank for conduit.
But even then it wasn't the smallest. It was a John Deer 110 I think Worth ![]() Last edited by Worth1; January 6, 2016 at 03:17 PM. |

What looks funny is when this guy a couple miles away uses his Bobcat to work on his mostly dirt driveway. It's on a slope so every time it rains a lot - you'll see him out there a day or two later on his Bobcat moving the dirt back up the hill. The driveway is around 100 feet long, and his Bobcat must be one of the smallest ones there is.

Sure enough the first few heavy rains washed part of it out. What they should have done was have Portland cement mixed in with it as it would have stabilized it. But at least this year they took all of the places it rutted across the drive and put in drain pipes under it. Worth |

I just want the people that hate me for killing trees know that I didn't cut any squirrel nest down they are still there and I have a ton of trees.
This will allow the better trees to fill out more. It is the same as a garden you cant plant too many plants next to each other because they will all suffer. Also I plan on putting in some dwarf fruit trees and flowering plants. Worth |
